31.5 cm is the smallest available working distance when using the 500D
4.0 cm is the smallest available working distance with this camera
53.0 cm is the biggest available working distance when using the 500D

(working distance was measured between the plane of the front lens and the subject)

result: you can get the biggest magnification when using the 500D with its closest position (smallest available working distance). in this case 35 mm is filling the longer (horizontal) side of the picture, contrary to the 55 mm value achievable in the closest working distance (4 cm) without the 500D. It's 157.1%, but when comparing the two shots at the 4.0 cm working distance this value is only 103.6% (nearly nothing). And when checking the two pictures both created from 31.5 cm we can get 317.1% (at 53 cm this is 285.1%).

so, when do you need this accessory for the powershot s1 is? if can't go too close (4.0 cm) to your subject, or if you can go, but don't want to take pictures with that 'nice' barrel distortion. with the 500D the focal length is the maximum 380 mm, so the distortion (any kind) is the smallest, more precisely nearly nothing thanks to the fantastic properties of the s1.
